Legal Status of Psilocybin in Portugal
At Syntara Retreats, we want you to feel safe and at ease in knowing that your journey is held in a fully legal and supportive environment. Portugal has taken a pioneering and progressive approach to drug policy since 2001, when it decriminalised the personal use of all substances. This means that participating in a psilocybin retreat here does not carry criminal consequences.
To fully comply with the law, we do not buy, sell, or distribute psilocybin. Instead, participants are invited to bring their own truffles, which are legally obtainable in neighbouring countries. This ensures that the retreat remains in alignment with Portuguese regulations while allowing us to offer a supportive, therapeutic framework for your experience.
Importantly, our retreats are carefully structured, guided by experienced psychotherapists, and held with a clear therapeutic and spiritual intention. While psilocybin itself is not “legalised” in the sense of being available for commercial sale, the decriminalised status in Portugal allows us to offer this work openly, responsibly, and in alignment with the spirit of the law.
We are committed to providing a safe, legal, and professionally held space in which you can explore your inner world with confidence. You can rest assured that your wellbeing and peace of mind are at the centre of everything we do.
Safety Protocols
Your safety and wellbeing are at the heart of everything we offer. We follow carefully designed protocols so you can feel fully supported before, during, and after your journey:
-
Comprehensive Screening – Every participant completes a thorough assessment and one-to-one conversation to ensure psilocybin is suitable and safe, identifying any potential contraindications.
-
Highly Trained Facilitation Team – Our facilitators are experienced psychotherapists and retreat leaders with specialist training in psychedelic therapy. They also receive ongoing training and supervision to remain aligned with the latest research and best practices.
-
Qualified Supervision – All sessions are led by trained therapists who provide continuous support throughout the experience.
-
Controlled Environment – Therapies take place in a peaceful, comfortable, and carefully managed setting that minimises external disturbances.
-
High Support Ratio – We keep our groups small, ensuring personalised attention and care at all times.
-
Holistic Care – Nourishing vegetarian meals, comfortable accommodation, and grounding daily practices (breathwork, movement, meditation) help create a safe and nurturing container.
-
Emergency Preparedness – While rarely needed, our team is trained to respond calmly and effectively to any unexpected situations, ensuring your safety at all times.
-
Confidentiality – Your privacy is respected throughout, with all experiences held in confidence and with the utmost care.
-
Ethical Standards – Our work is guided by professional codes of ethics, creating a foundation of trust, respect, and integrity.
-
Integration Support – After your psilocybin journey, we guide you through group and optional individual sessions to process insights and weave them back into daily life.
With these safeguards in place, you can rest assured that your retreat experience is held with the highest level of professionalism, care, and integrity.
